Arriving to Stinson Beach after the short but windy drive from San Francisco is a feeling akin to taking a deep breath. Interior designer Chloe Redmond Warner knows the feeling well. After renting a house there during the pandemic, she quickly fell in love with the close-knit community and has since designed interiors for several homes in the area, including this new vacation home by architect Eric Davies.

“The clients wanted the house to feel happy for their three young kids,” recalls Warner, whose new debut book, This Must Be the Place (Abrams), dedicates a chapter to this little slice of paradise. “And not pretentious or overly elegant.” The designer’s solution was to lean into the laid-back, indoor-outdoor living that makes the locale so special. The house frames an open deck with views to the ocean, and when the glass sliders are open, the living area flows seamlessly from inside to out.

Beach-house friendly polished concrete floors balance the rift-sawn oak paneling on the interior walls, which evoke a midcentury California coastal cabin feel. To allow the beachy views to be the star, Warner layered the interior with rich, neutral colors and warm, organic textures. Antique rugs, chairs in leather and wood, and accents of bronze throughout keep the open living area feeling grounded and connected to the outside. Kitchen cabinets in a terra-cotta hue offer personality while still acting as a neutral complement to the wood walls.

Whether working on a puzzle in the dining area with the windows open or cozying into the built-in banquette next to the fireplace on a cold evening, the house offers the perfect beach refuge. “There’s a glow and a hush to the house,” says Warner. “When the doors open, you smell the very Stinson scent of salt water, fog and sage. It’s amazing.”

Drenched in color and pattern, this Miami Beach refuge tempts good times and chill hangs.

Nestled in a canopy of flora and fauna, a Miami Beach guesthouse (which had once been relegated to a catchall for storage) received the glow-up of a lifetime thanks to designers Monica Santayana and Ronald Alvarez of Moniomi Design. Now lovingly referred to as the cabana, the structure functions as part pool house, part bonus living room, part entertaining hub and part home bar—plus more. “We were inspired by the idea of creating a boutique hotel moment right in our clients’ backyard,” the duo says. Because of its location right off the pool and lush surroundings, it was only natural to make the space an extension of the outdoors. Cue the palm-patterned ceiling, which was the jumping-off point for everything to follow, including the lagoon-colored wall tiles and the green terrazzo countertops with flecks of orange and yellow. Even the bar faucet dons a cheerful seafoam hue—something you wouldn’t find in the main house, which features a pink-hued palette. Here, though, it’s all about escape from the ordinary.

During an early planning-stage conversation, Boston designer Laura Keeler Pierce of Keeler & Co. and her clients agreed on a key design element: a striking blue terrazzo floor each had spotted in a Bahamas residence by designer David Netto. “We had both seen the project and were smitten by it,” Keeler Pierce recalls. It’s a bold choice for the brave of heart, making it a fitting selection for the fresh and energizing look the Chicago-area couple envisioned for their new-construction home in Florida’s Hobe Sound. The designer flowed the statement-making flooring across the kitchen, dining and living areas, complementing the walls with a pearlescent zellige backsplash, painterly geometric tiles framing the bar, and grass cloth wallpaper throughout that acts as a neutral backdrop for their art collection. Also decided early on, a Michael Eastman photograph in the kitchen helped to inform the interiors’ Sunshine State-centric hues. “It gave us this playful color palette to pull from,” Keeler Pierce says, pointing to the piece’s lush greens and pops of reddish coral she repeated in light fixtures over the bar and island.

Culminating the family’s commitment to the local lifestyle, an inviting loggia proves to be the ultimate outdoor living space, complete with a custom turquoise kitchen that perfectly matches the sun-drenched swimming pool. “The goal was to make this project feel casual and relaxed but fun and different from what we’re used to seeing,” Keeler Pierce sums. Mission accomplished.

Serene Soak

Japanese bathing rituals inspired designers John and Regan Mattingly’s fresh interpretation of a traditional wet room. Accessed through a hidden door in their clients’ Denver pool house, walls and ceilings of clé zellige tile (in a watery hue dubbed Tea Ceremony) meet black pebble mosaic flooring from Tile Bar—a pairing that nods to the look of a natural spring. Save for a skylight, the lack of windows is intentional, notes John. “This space is meant to be distraction-free, promoting inward cleansing and reflection,” he notes. Wooden tubs by Alfi—one for a cold plunge, one for hot—as well as Phylrich fixtures complete the scene.

One Stop Shop

Stone sinks remain the au courant status symbol of the bath, and Waterworks’ new Carlo Wall Mounted Lavatory Sink in a rich Portoro marble is no exception. Crafted in Italy from a solid block of stone, it makes a regal statement in even the smallest of spaces. The Enzo Sconce, also a recent debut, gives off an ethereal glow thanks to its alabaster design.

Maximum Impact

Technological advances in lighting design have opened a new world of possibilities for those seeking style-forward pieces in a room often dictated by function. In a space where every element is amplified, designers are careful not to overlook high-quality hardware. Cue the FiDi collection from New York City-based Hamilton Sinkler. Named after the storied downtown Manhattan neighborhood, the robust 19-piece line is available in a range of styles, including pulls, knobs and levers, in an impressive 16 finishes, with the burnished brass matte lacquer shown here. The calling card of FiDi is its concentric rings which offer a distinct tactile feeling when gripped.

Behold the latest from Eggersmann, the German leader in cabinet manufacturing. Osaka, their latest wood veneer, is both polished and organic, and follows a growing trend in kitchen design toward warmer, more inviting spaces.
